Chartered by the British co-monarchs William and Mary in 1693, the College of William and Mary is the second oldest institution of higher education in the United States, after Harvard. It is a public research university and numbers among its alumni U.S. president Thomas Jefferson, James Monroe, and John Tyler. Its campus is in Williamsburg, Virginia.
